Student College Planning

9th GRADE:

  • Get involved in extracurricular activities – can help with time management skills and enrich your high school experience!
  • It’s never too early to think about after high school! Attend the District wide College and Career Night at LHS
  • Get to know your counselor, develop a relationship with them early on to ask questions and get information.
  • Review the University of California (UC) and California State University (CSU) Minimum A – G Course Requirements. Students must have a grade of C or better in these A-G courses, look for posters around campus.
  • Stay updated by listening for the daily announcements, checking the College & Career Center Webpage, checking out your counselor’s canvas page and following us on social media!
  • If you are planning on playing collegiate sports, start now! Take the right courses and earn the best grades possible.

10th GRADE

    • Enroll in college-preparatory/AP courses/ CTE.
    • Get involved in extracurricular activities and make sure to track them for your resume and college applications
    • Attend the District wide College and Career Night at LHS.
    • If you are considering any military options, see the College & Career Center for recruiters contact information.
      • Take the ASVAB- for Career Exploration- whether you’re interested in the Military or not.
        •  Register in the Career Center
    • Review for the ACT/SAT- Make practice part of your routine, take free practice tests on http://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org and test prep on Khan Academy
    • Review the University of California (UC) and California State University (CSU) Minimum A – G Course Requirements. Students must have a grade of C or better in these A-G courses, look for posters around campus.
    • Plan on playing collegiate sports? Check your Core Course Completion. Register with NCAA Clearinghouse

     

    Check the LHS Daily Announcements regularly-all important school and College & Career events are posted in the Daily Announcements.

    Visit the College & Career Center in A104 regularly. Ask questions. Use the resources. Study. Do research.

11th GRADE:

  • FALL

    • Make a list of college characteristics that are important to you; i.e. regions of the country; cost; schools that offer particular majors, campus size etc.
    • Review the University of California (UC) and California State University (CSU) Minimum A-G Course Requirements. Students must have a grade of C or better in these A-G Courses, look for poster around campus.
    • Take a Career Assessment for free:

    • Consider taking the ASVAB (a career exploration assessment) to help narrow down career options
      • November 15th – Sign up in the Career Center
    • Plan on playing collegiate sports? Check your Core Course Completion and the NCAA clearinghouse.
    • Attend District College and Career Night at Liberty High School.
    • Stay on top of your grades…This is your final year to increase your GPA before College Applications.
    • Take the PSAT/NMSQT on October

    SPRING

    • Visit some local colleges – large, small, public, and private. Get a feel for what works for you.
    • Develop a list of 15 or 20 colleges that attract you.
    • Plan to visit colleges over spring break.
    • Consider taking the ASVAB (a career exploration assessment) to help narrow down career options
      •  Sign up in the Career Center
    • Take your CAASPP- EAP test in English & Math. Take these tests seriously! 
    • If you are considering military academies or ROTC scholarships, you should begin the application process this summer.

    SUMMER

    • If you are an athlete planning to continue playing a sport in college, register with the NCAA Eligibility Center.
    • Find a full-time or part-time job, or participate in a camp or summer college program.
    • Visit colleges. Take campus tours and, at colleges you’re serious about, make appointments to have interviews with admissions counselors.
    • Begin writing your UC Personal Statement or other required College Essays.

    September

    • Attend District College and Career Night at Liberty High School
    • Join the UC Personal Insight Q’s Workshop- Sign up in the Career Center.
    • Be sure to listen to the announcements to sign up for college visits.

    October

    • The submission period for University of California (UC) and California State University (CSU) runs from October 1st- November 30th.
    • Attend College Application workshops (App ATTACK!) for help with your college application. See Career Center for dates and times.

    November

    • Consider taking the ASVAB (a career exploration assessment) to help narrow down career options on November 15th – Sign up in the Career Center.
    • Attend College Application workshops (App ATTACK!) for help with your college application. See Career Center for dates and times.

    December

    • Apply to Local Scholarships- Packets are available December 1st in the College and Career Center
    • Beginning December 1st 2023, apply online for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) OR California Dream Act. Select the 2024/2025 school year.
    • Double check any application deadlines that may roll into December.

    SPRING

    January

    • Check your college communication emails/student portal and READ THEM- follow the directions given!
    • Check College/University Housing requirements, you may need to apply now!
    • LOCAL SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS DUE NO LATER THAN 4PM ON JANUARY 19TH!!!!

     

    February

    • Los Medanos Community College will be here in Feb/Mar for application workshops- See Career Center for dates and how to sign up.

    March

    • FAFSA/ CA DREAM ACT- Cal Grant deadline is March 2nd. Be sure to have completed your financial aid application prior to this date.
    • Check your college communication emails/student portal and review acceptances and To-Do Lists.

    April

    • Expect to hear from colleges by mid-April.
    • Consider taking the ASVAB (a career exploration assessment) to help narrow down career options on April 24th – Sign up in the Career Center.

    May

    • Graduates attending a 4-year institution need to request a final transcript through Parchment.com

    COMMON QUESTIONS

    • Are there scholarships for junior college as well as a 4-year college? YES – you can find out more by visiting the college’s Financial Aid Office.

     

    •  Can the Local Scholarships be used at a community college? YES – you never know what you can get, until you apply!!

     

    •  If I go to a junior college, do I need to complete the FAFSA? YES – there are grants and waivers available.

     

    • My parents make too much money, should I still complete the FAFSA? YES – let FAFSA make that decision, there are so many factors involved.

     

    •  Do colleges really look at my social media profiles? YES – be careful what you post, it never goes away.

     

    • Can a college rescind my acceptance? YES – your acceptance is contingent upon how you finish high school.

     

    • Are all college admission processes the same? NO – so keep track of admission requirements and deadlines.
